RUDOLF Christie's

Rudolf Bonnet (1895-1978; Amsterdam, Holland) studied at the Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid (National Arts and Crafts School) and the Rijksacademie (National Academy) in Amsterdam, Holland. He learned fresco painting in Italy. Bonnet first went to Bali in 1929 and lived in Ubud. In 1936 he helped to establsih the Pitamaha artists association.

The Rudolf Bonnet Foundation Netherlands was founded in 1980, two years after the death of Rudolf Bonnet in 1978. The mission of the Foundation was to continue as much as possible the work and support Rudolf Bonnet gave to Balinese artists. During his stay on Bali Bonnet advised the painters of Batuan to bundle their activities in a cooperation.

The artist's initial art education was in the form of an applied art school between 1913 to 1916. From 1920 until 1928, Rudolf Bonnet lived in the small Italian town of Anticoli Corrado, less than 50 km east of Rome. The inhabitants of this small village in the Sabine Hills were hard-working, poor peasants. Bonnet adjusted to their elementary lifestyle, and was allowed to portray their harsh lives, their rituals, their melancholia.
